A More Resilient Music Career Starts with Rethinking Income
How musicians can diversify their income without trying to do everything at once.
A music career rarely follows a predictable path. Performance opportunities fluctuate, teaching schedules change, and project-based work can leave gaps in income.
Building multiple income streams can help musicians create a more resilient career. But diversification doesn't mean taking on every opportunity. It means understanding what you already have and making deliberate choices about what to develop next.
Three Ways to Think About Income
In her KALOS Expert Insight Webinar, Creating Multiple Income Streams — Build a More Resilient Career, Irene Au introduced three types of income musicians can explore:
Earned income: Being paid for your time, skills or services, such as performing, teaching, recording or arranging.
Owned income: Generating income from work, rights or products you own, such as royalties, licensing, sheet music or digital products.
Relationship income: Building income through trust and direct connections, such as repeat students, returning clients, memberships or direct-to-fan sales.
These categories offer different ways to look at how your musical skills, work and relationships can support your career. They are not mutually exclusive, and the right mix will depend on your strengths, audience and circumstances.
A Four-Step Approach to Building Income Streams
Rather than pursuing multiple ideas at once, Irene shared a practical framework:
1. AUDIT — Review your income over the past 6–12 months. Where does it come from? What repeats? Where are you most dependent on a single source?
2. ALIGN — Choose opportunities that fit your strengths, values, audience, career stage and available capacity, rather than simply copying what works for others.
3. ADD — Develop one new income stream at a time. Start small, test the idea and give it room to grow.
4. ADJUST — Track not only income, but also time, energy, learning and opportunities. Review your progress and decide what to continue, improve or stop.
Start with One Small Experiment
You don't need to reinvent your career or have every answer today. Start by listing your income sources from the past twelve months, then identify one realistic opportunity you could explore over the next 90 days.
Treat it as an experiment: define what you want to test, observe the results and learn from the process.
The goal is not to do more for the sake of doing more. It's to build an income structure that better supports the music career you want.
