Webinar Recap: Building Your Network Through Meaningful Relationships

KALOS creators and members gathered for our June webinar, Build Your Network: Strategic Relationship Building, exploring one of the most overlooked yet important aspects of a sustainable music career — relationships.

Many musicians spend years developing their artistic craft, but few receive guidance on how to build professional connections. Yet throughout the music industry, opportunities often emerge through trust, recommendation, collaboration, and long-term relationships.

During the session, we explored what networking truly means for musicians. Rather than collecting contacts or promoting ourselves at every opportunity, effective networking is about building genuine professional relationships over time.

We discussed how strong networks can lead to collaborations, performance opportunities, teaching work, mentorship, referrals, and ongoing support throughout a musician's career.

Participants reflected on five habits of strategic relationship building:

• Be visible• Be curious• Be useful• Be reliable• Be consistent

The webinar also challenged common misconceptions about networking. Many emerging musicians focus on gaining access to opportunities, when in reality trust is often the foundation that creates those opportunities in the first place.

Through practical exercises, participants mapped their current networks, identified relationships they would like to strengthen, and practised writing thoughtful follow-up messages after meeting new contacts.

One of the strongest takeaways from the session was a simple reminder:

Your peers today may become your future collaborators, colleagues, and champions.

Building meaningful relationships is not a one-time activity but an ongoing practice of showing up, contributing value, and staying connected over time.
