We have just hosted our May Expert Insight Webinar, Contracts 101: Protect Yourself and Your Rights.
For many musicians, contracts are often seen as intimidating legal documents. But throughout these sessions, we explored a different perspective:
Contracts are not simply paperwork — they shape responsibilities, payment, rights, creative control, and future opportunities.
One of the key frameworks introduced was the “5W1H Method”, encouraging musicians to review agreements by asking:
Who
What
When
Where
Why
How
Participants also explored common contract terms and red flags, including ownership, exclusivity, cancellation, recording rights, automatic renewal clauses, and compensation structures.
The webinar further highlighted how different professional roles carry different concerns:
performers may need to pay attention to recording and reuse rights
instructors should clarify ownership of teaching materials
creators need to understand copyright, licensing, and assignment of rights
Another important discussion focused on the difference between legal and business decisions — reminding participants that negotiation, asking questions, and seeking clarity are all normal parts of professional practice.
Perhaps one of the most valuable takeaways from the webinar was this:
Protecting yourself is not being difficult. It is part of being professional.
We were encouraged by the thoughtful participation and discussions across both sessions, and we look forward to continuing these practical conversations through future KALOS webinars and community events.
