Hong Kong-born flautist Cathy Tsang is a versatile orchestral musician based in London. She recently worked with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv Orchestra, Bath Opera, Orchestra de Cymru, London Opera Company Orchestra, Lambeth Orchestra, Cardiff Opera, Ensemble Cambrica, Hong Kong Youth Orchestra, Hong Kong Six Arts Orchestra, Ponte Orchestra, among others.
As an enthusiastic musician, Cathy regularly presents flute and piano duo recitals across the UK and Hong Kong, and has contributed to concerts with community organisations such as the Friends of the Royal London Hospital and Oatleigh Care Ltd. She is a member of Ground Music HK, a flute and harp duo dedicated to promoting community engagement through music, and of the Fuloo Fuloo Flute Quartet, which recently collaborated with French May Hong Kong for a recital performance. She is a recent graduate of the Orchestral Performance Diploma and Master of Orchestral Performance programme at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, both of which she completed with scholarships. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, studying under Ms. Chuang Suet Wah Ivy and Mr. Brian Chan.
As a passionate learner, Cathy has performed in different masterclasses and was coached by Sebastian Jacot, Silvia Careddu, Emily Beynon, Nicola Mazzanti, Marie Zupancic, Barbara Haase, Juliette Bausor. Her international experiences include performances and festivals in the UK, Italy, Portugal, Vienna, and Singapore, with notable appearances at the Bank Austria Salon im Alten Rathaus (Vienna) and the Picadeiro Real de Belém, Museu Nacional dos Coches (Portugal).
In recent years, she has been awarded prizes in various music competitions. She performed at the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York (2019), after being presented the first prize in the Golden Classical Music Awards. She is also the winner of the New Talent Festival 2022 under the professional group of Woodwind and Brass Category Age Group, the finalist of the British Flute Competition 2022, as well as the Parsons Music Scholarship for Wind, Brass and Percussion Instrument. She is also the winner of the Excellence International Music Open Competition in 2019.
In recognition of her musical achievements, Cathy has been supported by the Help Musicians UK, Craxton Memorial Trust, the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers (Outstanding Award), and the Talent Development Scholarship (2020). She is also a RWCMD Scholar.
