Jason Poon (Violin)

At the tender age of five, Jason’s interest in music was suddenly sparked as he and his parents wandered into a Hong Kong music studio out of sheer curiosity.

There was no turning back, and under the early guidance of Professor Wong Ho Kei Calvin, Jason breezed through his Licentiate in Violin Performance (LTCL) at the age of twelve and his ABRSM Grade 8 in Piano and Viola soon afterwards.

Currently a third-year music student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) majoring in violin performance under Ms. Aimee Sung and minoring piano under Doctor Wu Mei-loc Mary, Jason is quickly establishing himself as both a versatile violinist and violist, praised amongst his peers for his “technically solid and powerful” playing and unwavering desire to exude passion in every performance he gives, along with numerous awards he has received from competitions of solo and chamber categories. He was also named as one of Musicus Society’s Honorable Mentions in the 2026 Young Artist Auditions.

His diverse and textured tone palette is already making a mark in the field of chamber music as well, and along with the valuable coaching provided by CUHK Professors Mak Su-yin, Frederick Lau, and Doctor Poon Kiu Tung and the multitude of masterclasses that he has attended including Professors David Frühwirth, Patrick Yim, David Gwilt, Antti Tikkanen and Leo Phillips, Jason’s dedication to the craft is clearly paying off.

Having performed at both the 2024 French May Art Festival and several CUHK Midday Oasis concerts in 2025 and 2026, Jason was also chosen as one of three student guest performers to play alongside Hong Kong’s acclaimed Cong Quartet (as a violist) in Brahms’s First String Sextet in their recital in 2026.

At a recent midday performance of Schumann’s E-Flat Major Piano Quartet at CUHK, South China Morning Post’s music critic Christopher Halls described Jason’s viola sound as, “vibrant and full-blooded, both nuanced and finely interwoven throughout the Andante cantabile and infectiously buoyant in the quicker outer movements.”

Outside of his other musical activities as concertmaster at the CUHK Student Orchestra, and violinist at the CUHK Chung Chi Orchestra, Jason can probably be found “arcading” and passionately baking for his sweet-toothed friends.
