Jayson Chan Hiu Chi earned his Bachelor of Arts in Translation from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), with minors in Music, Communication and Journalism, and Linguistics (Hong Kong Sign Language Stream). Currently, he is a second-year Master of Philosophy student in Translation at CUHK, focusing on music translation. His research explores the role of translation in promoting Cantopop lyrics and its impact on the genre’s globalization.
Jayson began his musical journey in classical music, majoring in violin, and later expanded into modern music during university. Currently under the tutelage of Mr. Dick Wong, he specializes in Pop and Jazz arrangement. Jayson arranges and composes primarily in J-Pop, R&B, and Fusion Jazz, with his latest Cantopop work available on all streaming platforms. He is also the vocalist for the Jazz Fusion band THE FLOWTERS and the violinist for the dynamic duo sideCHAIN.
In 2022, Jayson received a scholarship to study at the Department of Composition, Music College, at Seoul National University (SNU). While in South Korea, he was a core member of the SNU Jazz Society “JIVE,” performing at various university music festivals, jazz clubs, and outdoor events as a violinist, vocalist, and bassist. In 2023, he organized his solo performance “Self-reflection,” showcasing original and arranged works from genres such as Jazz, Funk, and Soul, and introduced Cantopop to international audiences, receiving enthusiastic acclaim. He also brought JIVE members to perform some original tunes at “Hypersonic Fest,” an Indie and Christian music festival in Hong Kong, where they explored the multifaceted possibilities of Jazz.
