Yaudia Cheung (Flute)

Described by multi-faceted flautist and actress Sarah Bennington as “a skillful, refined, and elegant musician”, Hong Kong-born Hei Yau (Yaudia) Cheung is known amongst her peers for her sweet flute voice and pristine piccolo playing. Not only does she exude both authenticity in connecting music with her imagination, Yaudia’s laser-like attention to detail is second to none.

In dividing her time between Hong Kong and the UK as flautist, piccolo player, and teacher, Yaudia embodies the true freelancer. Her diligent musicianship and versatility has led to her reputation as a highly sought after young artist with repertoire under her belt that spans the flute family in the major symphonic works of Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Elgar, up to large-scale arrangements of gaming music in a variety of orchestral settings.

Underscoring both her versatility and finesse, Christopher Halls, music critic of the South China Morning Post, noted recently in a performance at Hong Kong’s International Methodist Church that, “Cheung was equally at home with the edginess and wit found in Prokofiev’s D Major Flute Sonata as she was in juggling registers with refined sound purity in C.P.E Bach’s A Minor solo sonata.”

Currently studying with the Hong Kong Philharmonic's celebrated principal flautist Megan Sterling, Yaudia has not only collaborated with names such as Bennington, Jonathan Burgess, Matthew Featherstone, Pamela Stahel, Lindsey Ellis, and Carmen Ma, she has also performed a bevy of solo and chamber music in styles and settings ranging from pillars of the classical repertoire, composers such as Kuhlau and Jolivet, and the lesser known contemporary works of the Dutch-American composer Herman Beeftink.

In addition to her performance, Yaudia is a dedicated teacher of toddlers to teenagers in both solo and ensemble settings, where she strives to nurture curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of music.

Outside of her colourful musical life, one can find Yaudia grinding away at the boxing gym, balancing nimble, delicate movement with punches that prove decidedly less delicate.
