How Musicians Can Build More Resilient Careers with Multiple Income Streams
How can musicians build a more sustainable career when performance opportunities, teaching work and other sources of income can change over time?
This was the focus of KALOS's October Expert Insight Webinar, Creating Multiple Income Streams, led by Irene Au, Founder and CEO of KALOS.
The session brought together musicians to explore how they can think more strategically about income, identify opportunities that suit their circumstances, and build a more resilient professional future.
From One Income Source to a More Resilient Mix
A key message from the webinar was that building multiple income streams doesn't mean doing everything at once. Instead, it starts with understanding where income comes from today and making deliberate choices about what to develop next.
Irene introduced three types of income that musicians should know:
Earned income: Income from performing, teaching, recording and other services.
Owned income: Income generated through work, rights or products, such as royalties, licensing and sheet music.
Relationship income: Income supported by trust and direct connections, including repeat students, memberships and direct-to-fan sales.
These categories offer musicians different ways to understand how their skills, work and professional relationships can contribute to their income.
A Practical Framework for Taking the Next Step
The webinar also introduced a four-step framework to help musicians approach income diversification more intentionally:
AUDIT → ALIGN → ADD → ADJUST
The process begins by reviewing existing income sources and identifying patterns or areas of risk. Musicians can then consider which opportunities align with their strengths, values, audience, career stage and available capacity.
Rather than pursuing multiple ideas simultaneously, the framework encourages musicians to develop one new income stream at a time, track what happens, and adjust based on what they learn.
The session also included practical reflection exercises, inviting participants to map their current income sources and identify an opportunity they could explore over the next 90 days.
An Open Discussion About Real Career Challenges
One of the highlights of the webinar was the active participation throughout the session. Participants shared their own experiences and raised questions about multiple income streams, bringing different perspectives and real career concerns into the discussion.
These exchanges made space to consider how income diversification might work in practice, recognising that each musician's skills, circumstances and professional goals are different.
The discussion reinforced an important point: building a more resilient career is not about following a single formula. It is about understanding your own situation, exploring realistic opportunities and learning through action.
For musicians who want to explore this topic further, our accompanying Insight Article looks more closely at the thinking behind income diversification and how to approach it without taking on too much at once.
